frequently asked questions

What programs or services does BLC-Manila offer?

What is Blended Learning?

Blended Learning is a combination of onsite and offsite learning enhanced by real life experiences, service and community learning, and a highly personalized approach to learning.

The U.S. and Europe's version of blended learning relies heavily on online work akin to the platforms used in distance learning, but in BLC-Manila, this is kept to a minimum and only used when necessary. Instead, we teach our students—through Values Integration in their subjects—to use the Internet only as a support to their lessons and interests, equipping them with responsible search, navigation, and aggregating skills. We highly encourage the use of pen and paper, hard copy books, and healthy face-to-face discussion and discourse.

We also believe that learning is not confined to four walls of a classroom. Our learning center is located in a stately, mid-century house in Barangay Immaculate Conception, Cubao. There are no traditional "classrooms"—instead, there are learning spaces, and well-rounded facilities to stimulate curious minds and hands: a vegetable garden; ducks, fish, dogs; and an outdoor classroom.

Our brand of Blended Learning is adaptive learning. It takes into account the communities to which the children are exposed to. We believe in working closely together with the parents and caregivers of the child so that school and home are aligned with his or her progress and goals. We also encourage parents to get as involved with their children's school activities as possible—no pressure, but kids get a kick out of seeing their parents during programs, or teaching a class, or giving a talk.

What is BLC's approach to learning?

Blended Learning Center provides augmented homeschooling—the freedom, low pressure, personalized experience of homeschool with the benefits of a regular school: a brick-and-mortar environment, peers, group activities.

We are also qualified implementers of Google Apps for Education, a suite of solutions for much more efficient and creative learning and classroom management. We are also partners with Quipper, an online learning management system for Grades 4 to 12.

But we are definitely not all tech. Blended Learning Center-Manila has a Personalized Mentoring Approach which uses the C.A.D.I. Method for Personalized Learning.

What curriculum do you use?

We follow the DepEd’s K-12 curriculum.

Are you DepEd-accredited?

BLC-Manila itself is not accredited in its role as an implementer of the DepEd curriculum; our partner school, Headway School for Giftedness (HSG) is the institution that has DepEd accreditation. Hence, your children’s report cards and official DepEd records will be coursed through HSG.

What learning materials do you use in your blended and homeschool programs?

We use DepEd-approved material by DepEd-accredited schools Headway School for Giftedness (for elementary), enhanced by reading material and worksheets recommended and designed by BLC for your child’s level and interests. We also encourage one-on-one consultations with you or your child if there is a specific concern that needs to be discussed with the faculty.

if I would like to transfer my child to a traditional school? What should I do?

This would depend on the requirements of the school to which your child is applying. Some schools administer an entrance exam. We can help him or her prepare for that.

We can also provide a Form 138 (Report Card) and proof that they passed the previous grades—provided the child indeed has taken the exams given by our homeschool providers. These are recognized by the Department of Education, the results of which can be used to enter the traditional school system.

Please be guided, however, that we cannot release any official records until the student has fully paid his or her obligations.

Can children with special needs attend BLC?

We'd like to be clear and honest about things—we are not a SpEd school. Not all our teachers are SpEd specialists. The progress of our high functioning SpEd students is due entirely to the sincere care and personalized instruction the kids receive from the teachers and staff. But again, we do have their limitations, so it's best if the child's options are best discussed with the parents, his therapists/doctors, and the BLC team.

Do you accept students in the middle of the school year?

Yes, but only for homeschoolers (cut-off for Elementary is December, while for High school, it is September)

Do you accept homeschoolers from out of town or out of the country?

Yes. Books, worksheets and activities are mailed and emailed for them to do it at their own pace, and a weekly consultation can be held once a week via Google Hangouts or Skype. Shipping of books are charged to the enrollee.

Is there an entrance exam?

No.

How do I enroll my child?

You can come over and fill out the enrollment form, submit the other requirements onsite, and make the required payments.

Overseas and out of town enrollees can make a bank or wire transfer or pay through PayPal. Books will be sent once payment is received.

This is our definition of Blended Learning: Learning that is individualized, progressive, and experiential. It incorporates values in academics, and is nimble enough to switch between different approaches, depending on the child’s need. It’s not just about tech or online learning—here, it’s more about being digitally responsible.
